The 2017 South American Under-20 Championship was the 28th edition of the South American Under-20 Championship, a CONMEBOL tournament for national teams of under-20 players. Chairman James Taylor again attracted players from Scotland with Jimmy Milne and Bill Shankly. With players like Nick Ross, Jimmy Ross, David Russell, John Goodall, Geordie Drummond, Bob Holmes and Fred Dewhurst, the team became virtually invincible. Nick Ross, who had gone to Everton and then returned, died of tuberculosis and in April 1895 Fred Dewhurst also died. The following season the club became vice champion behind Everton and then twice in a row behind Sunderland. The lead over Everton was only two points. The following season the club finished in the middle of the league, but reached the FA Cup final, losing to West Bromwich.

His plan was to get top players from other areas, mainly Scotland, to play for the club. In 1952/53 the club competed for the title together with Arsenal and Wolverhampton. São Paulo Guarulhos Airport was also not yet ready to receive supporters; construction of a new terminal was halted in early May, as authorities qualified the construction site as unsafe. Rival clubs accused Preston of professionalism, which was not common at the time.
